2017 Launch The Turn Club

In September 2017 I started The Turn Club. This brings together my ambitions to use artificial power for major societal challenges. It is a club where art professionals, agents of change and practical idealists share their dreams, plans and ideas with each other, increase their visibility and bring their innovation to new places.

After all, society craves new ideals. Creative and artistic professionals can, with their with imagination, style and research, play a significant role in major challenges we face today. Unfortunately, these creators and connectors often work project by project and isolated from each other.

The Turn Club tackles social issues with an artist’s mindset. We show what art does with examples, lectures and articles. We connect, by forging bonds between art and important issues and we help each other to make a turn from result-oriented work to a sharing and connecting process.

2017 Four Drifting Seasons in Carnegie Hall

Op the 19th of September 2017, I was invited to contribute to the Concert for a Sustainable Planet at Carnegie Hall, which was part of a UN conference on sustainability. Here, with a children’s choir, I made the global temperature rise audible by converting measurements from the last 137 years into sounds. With Four Drifting Seasons, the story of climate change gets a physical, audible form. This offers a different perspective than what you get from the usual graphs. Can music increase the awareness of rising temperatures in this way? I dare not say it, but I do want to invite everyone to experience this piece by singing it yourself. For this I have developed an app for smartphones together with Marco Alkema, Kilian Elbers and Jan Driessen. This makes the performance of this piece possible for everyone.

2017 Musical Postcards in Carnegie Hall

How do you convey the story of a Syrian refugee to a large audience without emphasising victimisation?

By asking young refugees to transform their dream into a piece of music, then working with high school students to expand those compositions and having them performed in the most prestigious concert halls, we can break the stereotype of a child seeking refuge. We emphasise the imagination, beauty and openness for the future and thus build direct contact and exchange between people in a vulnerable situation and others who live in a privileged position.
Musical Postcards is, for me, a new way to view the role of a composer within society. Not (always) doing everything yourself, but designing models for the creative power of others and telling the most important and urgent stories of our time. It is wonderful to work together with musicians such as the New York Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, Philharmonie Zuidnederland and many others!
